Male Infertility
In the past, infertility was considered primarily a “female problem” but we now know that up to half of all infertile couples will have a male infertility component. This fact makes the semen analysis one of the most important initial fertility tests.
Male Infertility
In the past, infertility was considered primarily a “female problem” but we now know that up to half of all infertile couples will have a male infertility component. This fact makes the semen analysis one of the most important initial fertility tests. Surely, no treatment of the female should begin until male infertility has been “ruled out”.
Mild male infertility can often be treated with IUI while moderate to severe male factor is usually treated with IVF and ICSI.
Semen Analysis
Semen Analysis, An Essential Fertility Test
The semen analysis is one of the most important fertility tests given that up to half of all infertile couples with have a male infertility component. Given the extreme importance of ruling out subtle male infertility, it is best to have the analysis done at a reproductive medicine laboratory. These laboratories hire laboratory directors and technicians who are specialists in the evaluation of sperm. These specialists usually have years of clinical experience in identifying all types of semen abnormalities.
Vasectomy Reversal
Many fertile couples choose to control their fertility with permanent means of birth control with procedures like tubal ligation (cutting the fallopian tubes) for the woman or vasectomy (cutting the vas deferens) for the man. It should be emphasized that these two procedures are considered permanent even though successful fertility treatments such as the tubal reanastamosis (reconnect the fallopian tubes) or vasovasostomy (vasectomy reversal) are often possible.
